May asked the current EAP kids for advice to give to the next year’s participants. Here’s a quick list I came up with, archived here for more broadcasting power.
- Buy an Octopus Card at the MTR station at the airport, regardless of weather you choose to take MTR or taxi to the university
- Buy a phone card at the 7-Eleven store at the airport, and make sure you have a GSM (non-CDMA) phone.
- Make sure to bring a bunch of passport-sized photos of yourself. You’ll be needing them a lot on the first day, and taking pictures on the first day is quite a hassle.
- A few weeks into the semester, you’ll be able to apply for a Student Octopus Card, giving you 50% off on MTR rides. Even though technically semester-exchange students are not allowed to apply, apply anyways. The school will still approve you.
- If you don’t have an international credit card, bring lots of US dollars in cash. Opening a bank account here is easy.
- Bring a first-aid kit. Band-aids here are really sticky and painful to remove. Common over-the-counter medicines are also a lot less effective from my personal experiences.
- Power plugs can be easily obtained at Mong Kok for HK$5 a piece, so don’t worry too much about it.
